Zamfara: Let’s Take Responsibility, Issa-Onilu Tells APC Deputy National Chairman, NWC

Lanre Issa-Onilu, National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked the leadership of the party to take responsibility for the mistakes that cost it massive electoral fortunes and setbacks especially in Zamfara State.

Issa-Onilu was responding to Alhaji Lawan Shuaibu, APC Deputy National Chairman, North, who in a six-page letter accused his National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, among other things, of running APC like a private estate and sole administrator.

Lawan had also claimed that minutes of meetings often held at the private office of Oshiomhole, where they were taken all, were doctored at will or subverted.

But Issa-Onilu said that the claim that the national chairman ran a one-man show also suggests that the entire membership of the NWC are “a bunch of cowards” and an “incompetent” lot, a tag, he said, would be seriously disputed by the current members of the NWC.

He said that as leaders, when decisions and actions did not result in desired outcomes, the way to go is not to look for scapegoats or who to blame.

He said that the present NWC since inauguration had been working to institutionalise the best ideal of progressive politics and bring all under the rule of the party.

Issa-Onilu said, “Senator Lawan Shuaib assertions in the letter to the National Chairman portrayed the NWC as a bunch of cowards looking for a scapegoat to pass on the blame following undesired results in his home Zamfara State.

“When he (Senator Lawan Shuaibu) alleged that the National Chairman is running the party like a sole administrator, does that mean the rest of us are incompetent? I doubt if he would have many members of the NWC supporting him in this.

“The ability to face up to the challenges and to take responsibility for mistakes are important qualities of a leader. If the NWC had taken any action that did not produce the desired result, it would be plain cowardice to look for a scapegoat or pass on the blame to another person.

“Since the Comrade Oshiomhole-led NWC came to office, we have been doing our best to institutionalise the best ideals of progressive politics. We understand that we must bring everyone under the fold of the party, where all of us would be subject to our party’s rules and conventions.

“We understand that impunity can provide temporary advantage and even successes.”
