Security: Motorcyclists get June 1 deadline for registration of motorcycles

Owners of motorcycles in Niger state have been given till June 1st 2019 to register their motorcycles or stop operating in the state.

Commercial motorcycle operators have also been directed to get government identification cards upon registration permitting them to operate their motorcycles commercially.

Failure to adhere to these directives will lead to confistication of the motorcycles, arrest and prosecution.

These directives were given during an expanded security council meeting held in Government House, Minna.

Disclosing this to newsmen, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Honorable Danjuma Salau said the decisions were part of steps taken to protect lives and property and reduce the rising security challenges in the state.

He said that the council also endorsed the recent military ban on the use of motorcycle in the forest areas of the state along with six other states in the north west zone of the country.

The Commissioner said, “The security council observed the influx of unregistered motorcycles in our cities and towns as well as in the villages. It also expressed concern over the use of these unregistered motorcycles to commit crimes and inflict hardship on people.

“The council then directed that all motorcycles must be duly registered and that from 1st of June owners of unregistered motorcycles will be arrested and prosecuted, while the motorcycle is confiscated.

“The council also directed that all Commercial motorcycle operators in the state are to be duly registered and are to be issued with official identification cards. They are also to secure an attestation letter from their community (Mai Angwar) before the identification cards are issued”.

Salau further disclosed that the Director of Personnel Management (DPM) in all the 25 local government councils of the state have been ordered to get detailed profiles of all hotels and guest houses in their areas and take a census of all uncompleted and abandoned buildings in all the local government councils to ensure that they are not used as hiding places by criminals.

Hoteliers across the state have also been ordered to furnish the security agencies details of their guests on daily basis in order to ascertain the category of being lodged in the hotels.

Each local government council were also directed to set up Community Security Committee in each of the three zones of the council to help coordinate and disseminate vital security information and to gather necessary intelligence that will help in securing the state.
